One of the most entrenched traditions in the Spanish culture is the celebration of the king’s night, when children and adults are filled with illusions and hopes. The Cavalcade is a parade on each January 5th that is carried out in large and small cities in Spain. It is to represent the route that toured the Magi from Bethlehem to find baby Jesus following the star which pointed the way. In Spain there is the tradition of delivering gifts to children on the night of January 5th to 6th. That night, long awaited by children, the three Magi arrive in the city with all their entourage and they are received by the authorities. Mounted on their camels, the kings parade through the city to enjoy and delight children who are looking with eyes full of wonder and enthusiasm.
Traditions identify a variety of different names for the Magi. In the Western Christian church they have been commonly known as
- Caspar or Gaspar (and several other Greek or Latin variants such as Gathaspa, Jaspar, Jaspas, etc.).
- Melchior (Melichior, Melchyor)
- Balthasar (Bithisarea, Balthassar).
Even the Kings day is on 6th of January, nearly all the primary schools celebrate Kings day before the Christmas. This is very special day for the children, they are waiting for the Kings with great excitements. Mainly because the Kings or three Magi bring gifts and sweets for the children.
Jitu has been invited by the local school to be one of the Magi that brought gifts to Jesus. here are some photos
He has been doing this for last 7 years. This is good opportunity to tell the children the message from Jesus. I asked every child about Christmas, what it means to them and why do we celebrate it and to my surprise many children did not even know why we celebrate Christmas. Some say its Santa Claus, some say its Kings. Its a shock to hear that they do not know the real story behind all these stories.
So I take this opportunity to tell them the story of Christmas and then finally I tell them that I have a message from Jesus for them. Most of their eyes go wider and they ask me what it is? and I tell them that, “Jesus told me to tell you that, HE love you some much and you can talk to HIM, HE is always with you.”. There is a great joy on the face of every child just knowing the Jesus has send a special message for them.
This is called redeeming cultures, presenting the true story when the culture twists the real story.
